Reframing Health in the Age of Microtoxicity

This project explores the long-term effects of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in a post-plastic world, focusing on their environmental and human health impacts, policy responses, and technological innovations. Since the advent of plastic in 1907, global production has soared, resulting in significant pollution and accumulation of plastic waste, particularly in oceans. MPs and NPs, pervasive in ecosystems and the human body, pose substantial risks, including developmental disorders and tissue sensitivity.

Public Interaction & Evaluation
Awareness as the Catalyst for Change

In recent years, as microplastic pollution shifts from an environmental issue to a deeply personal one, we find ourselves asking new questions—not just how much harm exists, but what kind of future we are willing to accept.

I am glad to see people sharing their opinions in the comments. Regardless of whether they agree or disagree with the prediction shown in the video, discussion creates awareness and clarifies the issue.

Balancing Functionality and Visual Provocation

In speculative design, the goal is not always to deliver practical solutions, but to provoke thought, question norms, or explore alternate futures. However, if a concept lacks structural logic or material coherence, it risks being dismissed as purely fictional or implausible. On the other hand, if the design is overly technical, it may fail to capture attention or invite curiosity.

Adjusting Tolerances and Mould for Casting

Utilising DFM and SLA 3D printing to quickly review the design and assembly accuracy. For simulating the latus texture, I build molds for silicone casting.

The Breastfeeding Filter is designed to reduce MPs and NPs in breast milk before it is fed to the baby. The device blends a precise amount of plastic-eating enzyme with the expressed milk in a glass container, which is then fed to the baby through a natural latex nipple.

Final Design

When Nature is No Longer Natural

The transgenerational transmission of MPs primarily through breastfeeding postpartum, the design capitalizes on the inherent contradiction of breastfeeding — a cherished, natural, and healthy process for both mother and baby. The design prioritizes the preservation of the benefits associated with breastfeeding, including fostering close contact between mother and baby.

This contradiction serves as a potent vehicle for introducing the concept of delayed impact from plastics and the accumulation and dissemination of MPs/NPs within our bodies.

Behind The Scene -Props and AI-aid design

The mockumentary film presents a future scenario where two products are integrated, depicting the life of a mother impacted by rising concentrations of MPs and NPs. It also explores potential solutions and contrasting perspectives.
The AI-generated props, including music and posters, simulate diverse perspectives opposing the proposed “solution,” aiming to create a more immersive scenario and foster broader discussion.

A Future in Question

Untitled-10.png

In recent years, as microplastic pollution shifts from an environmental issue to a deeply personal one, we find ourselves asking new questions—not just how much harm exists, but what kind of future we are willing to accept.

While research continues to unfold, solutions remain partial and uncertain.

This project does not offer a perfect fix.
Instead, it offers space—
to pause, imagine, and ask:

“If this isn’t the future I want, what am I ready to change?”

Awareness, I believe, is the most human starting point.
